An Amazon affiliate website is a content site that recommends products and links to them with your Associates tag, earning a commission on qualifying orders; you build one by picking a narrow topic, setting up a fast site, writing helpful buying content, then applying to the program and making three qualifying sales within 180 days. The building is the easy part. The work is in writing pages people trust and following the program's rules on images, prices and links.
This guide covers each step in order, with the rules taken from the program's own agreement and policies.
Quick answer
What it is
A content site whose product links carry your Associates tracking tag.
Approval
Three qualifying sales within 180 days of applying, then a manual review.
Commission
A percentage that differs by product category, set out in the program's fee schedule.
Cookie
24 hours from the click; items added to the cart in that window can count for longer.
Images and prices
Only through the program's tools or product API. No re-hosted photos, no hard-coded prices.
Time
A weekend to set up; many months of steady writing before traffic grows.
How an Amazon affiliate website makes money
A reader lands on your page, reads your comparison, clicks a product link carrying your tag and buys. The store pays you a share of eligible orders made in that shopping session. It does not cost the reader anything extra.
Earnings depend on four things you can measure: visits, the share who click, the share of clickers who buy, and the commission rate. Here is one example in plain figures:
Worked example for a small product site
Step
Number
Visits a month
3,000
Readers who click a product link (6 percent)
180
Clickers who buy (5 percent)
9 orders
Average order value
40
Example commission rate (3 percent)
about 10.8 a month
That is a modest figure, and it is honest. The rate here is only an example, since real rates vary by category. Growth comes from more visits and better pages, not tricks. Short cookies mean you earn mainly when your content convinces someone to buy soon.
Step by step: building the site
Choose a topic you can go deep on. "Kitchen" is too wide. "Gear for small apartment kitchens" gives you a clear reader and a hundred page ideas.
Register a domain. The program policies say your domain may not include an Amazon trademark or a misspelling of one. Pick a brandable name of your own.
Pick a platform. A free, open-source content system on paid hosting gives the most control. A hosted builder works too. Compare options in our website builder guide.
Install a light theme. Fast pages, readable fonts and clean tables matter more than looks. Our template guide lists what to look for.
Create the basic pages. About, contact, privacy policy and a disclosure page.
Write your first ten articles before you apply, so reviewers see a real site.
You can apply as soon as the site has real content, but approval is not instant. Here is what the program asks for, based on its Operating Agreement and help pages.
Three sales in 180 days. After you apply, you have 180 days to refer three qualifying sales. The application is reviewed after that. If you miss the window, the application is closed and you can apply again.
Original content. Reviewers look for a site with useful pages of its own, not just copied product descriptions.
Your own orders do not count. Sales to yourself, family or friends you ask to buy are not qualifying sales.
Correct site list. Every site and app where you place links should be listed in your account.
Cookie notice. The policies ask you to tell visitors about cookies and similar tools used on your site, usually in your privacy policy.
No rewards for clicking. You may not offer anything to people in return for using your links.
Do not push friends to buy through your links to reach three sales. It breaks the rules and the account can be closed for it.
Can I use Amazon product images on my affiliate website?
Only through the program's own tools. This rule catches many beginners.
Images and prices: allowed and not allowed
Allowed
Not allowed
Image links built with SiteStripe or served by the product API
Downloading product photos and uploading them to your site
Your own photos of products you bought and tested
Copying photos from other review sites
Prices pulled live from the API or served inside program links
Typing a price into your article
Text such as "check the current price"
Showing stale prices or old stock status
Prices change all the time, so the program policies only let you show price and availability when the data comes from the program itself. If you are not using the API, leave prices out and link to the product page instead.
Your own photos make better content anyway. A picture of the blender on your counter, with measurements, says more than a stock image.
Linking rules: SiteStripe, short links and emails
The simplest way to get tagged links is SiteStripe, the bar that appears at the top of product pages when you are logged in to your Associates account. Copy the text link and paste it into your article.
Short links: skip generic shorteners and any button that masks the store's address.
Cloaking: do not disguise or redirect links in a way that hides where the click came from.
Emails: links are permitted only in messages the reader signed up for, under the policies as they stand.
Offline: no links in print, ebooks or offline promotions.
Link tags: add rel="sponsored" to product links to flag them as paid for search engines. Our guide on affiliate links and SEO explains why.
Content that earns: reviews, comparisons and buying guides
The best Amazon affiliate website examples share one trait: they answer a buying question better than the store page does. Three page types do most of the work.

An Amazon product review website lives or dies by honesty. Say when a product is not worth the money. Readers come back to sites that do. Our guide to building a product review website covers testing methods, and you can browse affiliate website examples for site structures that work.
Turnkey and ready-made sites: read this first
Sellers offer turnkey Amazon affiliate websites with themes, products and articles already loaded. Be careful.
Articles are often thin and shared with dozens of other buyers, which makes ranking unlikely.
Product images may be re-hosted against the rules.
Prices may be hard-coded and wrong within days.
You still need your own approval and three sales.
A ready-made site can save setup time, but you will likely rewrite most of it. If you want an existing site with real traffic, read our guide to buying an affiliate website instead. If budget is the issue, see what a free affiliate website can and cannot do.
Disclosures on an Amazon affiliate site
The program asks for a fixed statement on your site, shown clearly and prominently. US regulators also want a plain note close to your links. In practice, place both lines ahead of the opening product link of every article, and keep the statement in your footer.
The generator on our Amazon affiliate disclosure page gives you the exact sentence and a matching reader line, with placement tips for emails and videos.

Questions people ask
How do I create an Amazon affiliate website for free?
You can test the idea on a free builder subdomain, but free plans often limit custom domains and speed. Most owners move to a cheap domain and hosting once they commit, because reviewers and readers trust a real site more.
Which website builder suits an Amazon affiliate site best?
A free, open-source content system on paid hosting gives the most control and plugins for tables and link tags. Hosted builders are simpler but less flexible. Pick the one you will keep publishing on.
How do I add my website in my Amazon affiliate account?
You enter your site addresses when you apply, and you can edit the list later in your account settings. Add every site and app where you plan to place links.
Can I use an Amazon affiliate website template?
Yes, a template only controls layout. Choose one that loads fast and shows tables well, and fill it with your own writing and photos.
How long does an Amazon affiliate website take to earn?
Expect six to twelve months of regular posting before visits from search pick up on most new sites. Earnings depend on visits, click rate, conversion and the category rate, so there is no fixed timeline.
What happens if I do not get three sales in 180 days?
The application is closed. You can apply again later, ideally once the site has enough traffic to make sales more likely.
